I Kept Forgetting to Feed Something

Dreamed on July 13, 2026

There was an animal in a room in my flat that I had not been into for a while, and I remembered it the way you remember an unsent email — suddenly, physically, in the chest.

I never saw it. The dream was entirely about the corridor and the door and the arithmetic of how long it had been. I kept revising the number downward, which I knew even at the time was dishonest.

I did not open the door. I woke myself up on purpose, which I have only managed a handful of times.

Waking up
Heart going. Sat on the edge of the bed for a minute genuinely trying to remember whether I own a pet.

The revising downward is the honest part of the dream, and you caught yourself doing it.

Everything else is deferral: the corridor, the door, the sum. You never saw the animal, which means the dream isn't about the animal. It's about the arithmetic — the negotiation you were conducting with yourself about how bad it was.

Waking yourself on purpose is the same move, performed once more, at a higher level. I say that without any judgement. It's a skill.

Gentler alternative: you did not open the door because there was nothing behind it yet.

Not every unopened door is avoidance. Some dreams simply run out of material, and the sleeping mind covers by making the missing part feel forbidden.

If it recurs and the door is still there, I'd revise my view. Once is not a pattern.
