Teeth, Again

Dreamed on August 3, 2026

Third time this year. A molar comes loose, I catch it, and then the next one, and it becomes a matter of logistics — where to put them, whether to keep them, whether it's rude to do this at the table.

This time there was a new detail: I was at a work lunch and I was trying to conduct the conversation without opening my mouth too far. I remember constructing whole sentences out of words that didn't need much jaw. Somebody asked me a question that required the word "obviously" and I panicked.

It stopped being frightening years ago. Now it's mostly an administrative problem.

I looked it up once and every website says it means the same thing. I don't believe them and that's partly why I'm putting it here instead.

Waking up
Bored, honestly. And then irritated at being bored by my own subconscious.

  • I remember constructing whole sentences out of words that didn't need much jaw.

The most effortful thing in the dream is concealment, not the loss itself.

Ignoring every website: the interesting thing here isn't the teeth, it's the sentence engineering.

You were building conversation out of low-jaw vocabulary in real time. That's a very specific competence to display in a dream. And the panic came not from your mouth falling apart but from a word — "obviously" — that would have exposed you.

The dream isn't about decay. It's about performing normality while something is quietly going wrong, and being quite good at it.

Whether that's true of your waking life is yours to say, not mine.

Fifteen years of the same setting suggests to me that we should be careful about reading each instance as a message.

Some recurring dreams are less like letters and more like weather. What changes is the detail, and this year the detail was a work lunch. Last year it may have been something else. I'd pay attention to what the dream borrows from your current life rather than to the teeth, which appear to be the fixed furniture.

You've had this dream long enough to be its expert. I'm just a visitor.
