My Grandmother Was Younger Than Me

Dreamed on July 18, 2026

She was maybe twenty-five, in a dress I've only seen in one photograph, and she was talking to me the way you talk to a colleague. Practical. Slightly impatient. She wanted help moving a wardrobe.

The strange part wasn't her age. It was that I understood everything she said, and she was speaking Vietnamese faster than I can actually follow. In the dream my comprehension was perfect. I noticed this while it was happening and felt a kind of relief that I've not felt awake in years.

We moved the wardrobe. It went into a room that I don't think existed on the other side of the door before we opened it. She said something that I understood completely at the time and could not reconstruct thirty seconds after waking.

I've written down four guesses at what it was. None of them are right.

Waking up
I lay still for a long time trying to hold onto the sentence. It went anyway.

Reflections

  1. What I understand now · 2 days ago

Three weeks on, I've stopped trying to recover the sentence. What stayed is the fluency, not the words. I think I was dreaming about being able to talk to her, not about anything she said.

The fluency is the event. You say it yourself, almost in passing: you felt relief you haven't felt awake in years.

Everything else in the dream is ordinary domestic labour. A wardrobe, a room, a woman being slightly impatient with you. The extraordinary thing was the effortlessness of understanding, and it's the one part you can't bring back.

I don't think the lost sentence was ever the point. I think you'd have lost any sentence. What you were given was fifteen seconds of not straining.

Understood later

I wrote a reflection today that says nearly the same thing without meaning to. It took me three weeks to arrive where this reading already was.

I want to offer something slightly different, because I think there's a risk in making this too tender.

She wanted help moving a wardrobe. She was impatient. She treated you like a colleague, not a grandchild. That's not a dream of reunion — reunion dreams are usually soft and slightly unreal. This one had a job in it.

Maybe what you're missing isn't her, exactly. Maybe it's being useful to her.
