Unfinished Building, Third Visit

Dreamed on July 21, 2026

Same building as February and as last autumn. Concrete frame, no cladding, staircases that arrive at floors that aren't poured yet. I know it well enough now that I have preferences about which way to go up.

This time there were workers, which is new. They weren't building it. They were measuring, carefully, and writing things down, and one of them nodded at me as though I had clearance to be there.

I went to the floor where the view is — you can see a city that I've never identified, low, with a river doing something complicated in the middle distance. I stood there for a long time.

On the way down I noticed that the stairs I came up by were gone, and that this did not concern me at all, because I knew about the other stairs.

Waking up
Contented. I'd almost say I look forward to this one.

What's changed between visits is you, not the building.

First visits to recurring places are usually anxious — you're establishing where you are. You now have preferences about which staircase, you accept a nod as clearance, and you're untroubled when a route disappears because you have other routes.

That's expertise. Whatever this building is in your life, you've stopped being lost in it.

The workers were measuring and writing things down. Not building.

That's a survey, not a construction site. Somebody, in your dream, is establishing the current state of an unfinished thing rather than finishing it.

You're an architect, so you'll have better instincts than me about whether that's reassuring or not.
