Someone Else's Kitchen

Dreamed on July 26, 2026

I was cooking in a kitchen I didn't recognise, and I knew where everything was. That was the whole feeling of it. I reached for the colander without looking and it was where my hand went.

There were people in the next room. I could hear the specific noise of a family that has been together long enough to interrupt each other. I wasn't nervous about them. I was making something with rice.

Halfway through, I realised the reason I knew the kitchen was that I had lived there, and then immediately I could not remember when. The knowledge and the memory came apart. I stood with the spoon and tried to date it and couldn't.

Nothing bad happened. I finished cooking. I think I even ate.

Waking up
Warm, and then unexpectedly sad about ten minutes later while making actual coffee.

"The knowledge and the memory came apart." I've read a lot of dreams on here and I've never seen it put that cleanly.

What strikes me is how physically competent you were the whole time. Your hands knew the room. That's a kind of belonging that doesn't require you to remember anything, and the dream let you have it right up until you interrogated it.

I wonder whether the sadness ten minutes after waking was about the kitchen at all, or about discovering that you can belong somewhere without being able to account for it.

A smaller observation. You were making something with rice, and you don't say what. In a dream that is otherwise very precise — the colander, the noise of the family — the food is the one vague thing.

I translate for a living and this is what an untranslatable word looks like in a sentence. Everything around it sharp, the thing itself blurred.

That might be nothing. But if you dream of that kitchen again, I'd look at the pot.
