The Exam I Never Registered For
Dreamed on July 29, 2026
I am seventy-one years old and I dreamt about an examination in a subject I have never studied. Statistics, apparently.
The hall was the gymnasium of the school I taught at, not the one I attended, which I noticed and found impertinent. The invigilator was one of my own former pupils, now middle-aged, and she was very sorry but rules are rules.
I had no pen. I asked three people. The third gave me a pen that didn't work, and I sat with it for a while making the small angry circles you make on a corner of a page.
The paper, when I finally read it, had one question on it and the question was about my father. I don't remember what it asked. I remember thinking: well, that's not statistics.
